Cardiff University – Julian Hodge Building
Food company Itsu is the inspiration behind the design of the canteen in Julian Hodge. The interiors are cheerful and welcoming with elements of Asian aesthetics such as light timber finishes and paper screens. With splashes of bright pinks and yellows, this concept is reflected in the designs of Julian Hodge’s canteen. Overall the walls and flooring remain minimalistic, yet blasts of vibrant colours appear in the furniture and fittings.
The primary palette used in the Julian Hodge Building is yellow, pink, orange with a splash of blue. The colours chosen are ones that encourage peace and tranquillity, promoting both physical and mental relaxation. Blue reduces stress, creating a sense of calmness, relaxation and order. The colour yellow has an element of fun and promotes alertness and happiness throughout the space. Orange promotes success which will help the business students forward thinking.
The overall design of Julian Hodge provides a variety of seating and dining to suit each individual. The existing brick walls were painted white creating a bright airy space. The solid wall between the canteen and servery has been replaced with glazing enabling natural light to travel freely between the two spaces.
The high bars finished in a natural oak laminate to reflect the existing timber panelling on the ceiling divides the dining area. This zone is brightened up with vibrant pink metal stools. Neon lighting has been installed to liven up The primary space and appeal to the target users. Tiered plywood seating and soft breakout furniture creates playful and friendly zones enabling users to enjoy and relax. This range of seating allows students to relax or work in a way that suits them, enabling flexibility.
